GENERAL SUBMISSIONS

Thank you for your interest in writing for Transpositions. We publish work that is critically rigorous yet accessible, spirited yet professional, and rich in connections. We exist to create conversations between theology and the arts, interacting with relevant ideas, trends and scholarship for popular and academic audiences, and we invite guest contributions that further this goal.

Get to Know Us

It is important to familiarize yourself with the sort of writing we want. In addition to reading the guidelines below, it may help to read articles already published on our site.

At Transpositions, you’ll find articles on Fleabag and Macbeth, Sally Rooney and Dostoevsky, Taylor Swift and Johnny Cash, Kandinsky and John of Damascus, Kendrick Lamar and Arvo Part, Czeslaw Milosz and Sylvia Plath — the list goes on, but you get the idea. Our writers engage with philosophical and theological interlocutors with rigour, drawing from diverse thinkers that range just as widely. Here you’ll encounter thinkers like Aquinas, Balthasar, Simone Weil, the Inklings, Julian of Norwich, Charles Taylor, Plato, Aristotle, Hartmut Rosa, Hildegard of Bingen, Kathryn Tanner, and many, many more.

Our Guidelines

Purpose: The purpose of an article is not just to inform, but also to invite conversation. It is important, therefore, that articles should not only present a position or pose a question, but also invite dialogue on stated positions or questions.

Topic: We will consider any topic dealing with the intersection between theology, imagination, and the arts.

Language and Style: Since we desire to write to both a popular and academic audience, please avoid overly technical language and style. If using technical terminology is necessary, make sure it is adequately explained. In addition, please avoid an overly devotional tone. Purely personal essays or memoir will not be considered.

Editing: All submissions will be proofread and copyedited. We may request minor revisions or make minor copy edits, and will communicate all changes in advance of publication.

Length: Articles should be roughly between 1200–2000 words. If articles significantly exceed this word limit, they may be rejected or returned for rewriting.

Author Bio: If this is your first time writing for Transpositions, please include a short 2–3 sentence bio with your submission. If accepted for publication, we will request an author image as well.

Terms & Conditions: It is important that you are familiar with our terms and conditions. You will need to confirm that you have read and agree with them prior to publication.

AI Policy: Work submitted to Transpositions must be entirely original and authored by you. Read more details here.
